Blog 8: Why IT Fumbles

Dear Mr. Peterson, I believe that Montclair State should heavily invest in improving their IT infrastructure. This decision was made after I heard the consultants from Tuesday. I believe that by improving the IT infrastructure of MSU will allow for the school to better understand our student body via better data collection. However, I do have some concerns with regards to improving upon the suggestions brought about by the consultants. My first improvement would be to bring on a data analysist to help better train the staff with regards on how to better input, and output data. The analytics being conducted by Montclair State appears to share some similarities to the Data Warehouse system which is going to be implemented by PFM devices. If this assumption proves true, then having a data analysist would greatly improve the system’s efficiency. My second improvement would be to better quantify how this data would be collected in the first place. Would it be through observation of s...

Tech Tool Blog -- Project Management

Image
Dear Mr. Peterson, I was contacted by the famous scooter company , ARC, to help them construct a Gnatt Chart to assist in the development of their new RED STREAK Scooter. They commissioned me to test out the free online software known as TeamGnatt for the construction of the Gantt Chart. It's usability is okay, but appears to only give the bare bones options for the free users. This means that some of the key features are not given to the free user, and the software is not nearly as efficient as it could be. Another draw back of the software is the lack to automatically account for federal holidays, or even preset holidays. It seems like such an easy feature to implement, yet it could be behind the pay wall. I would say the program would take an average person with an average technical know how  about 4 hours of proper training before they feel comfortable with the software. As for ARC's Gantt Chart here it is: Here are the questions ARC wanted me to answer.  1. ...

What Should Junk Van Do

Hello Mr. Peterson, I recently returned from Montreal from the meeting with Junk Van and their Information Technology consultants. The issue Junk Van was facing was regarding the need to expand their IT capabilities in order to expand their operations further. Currently they are experiencing daily processing errors such as inaccurate data, lost emails and manual calculation errors. The solution the consultants suggested was to use software as a service to provide them with the IT software required to function. Software as a service is as the name suggests software being treated as a service rather than a product. We will talk about the issues with that concept later in the memo, but for now one should focus on the positives Software as a Service.  In this case, one can assume that the software in question would be similar to the microsoft office suite and google docs/drive.  In this case one can view my previous post regarding which one to use between Microsoft and Google her...

HTML Coding & API with respect to Google Maps.

Hello Mr. Peterson, As you can tell by the header of my blog, there is a google map of the Magic Kingdom at the top of my Blog. This was done as a test of Google's API for Google maps, in particular google maps embed APIs.  APIs can do more than just allow for one to show a map of a location, for example our business, on a blog or website. APIs have all sorts of uses from a variety of different sources. There are Youtube APIs, Google search history APIs, and plenty of other APIs not developed by Google. Honestly, I see the need to dive deep into researching the topic to better improve our company's presence on the web. Now as for specific Google Maps Embed API for a given location, its usefulness really depends on whether or not our hypothetical firm in question requires that we attract people to our location. Such places include stores, doctor's offices, lawyers offices, or any other place which requires a one to physically be there to take advantage of the service. Whi...

Should We be Using Smartdraw or other similar Software.

Hello Mr. Peterson, I was informed that you are interested in using some form of drawing software for the creation of training materials and other paper work. One such program you mentioned was Smart Draw and the other mentioned was Visio by Microsoft. Both programs are primarily used for business applications and they both specialize in creating more visual based documents. Such materials include, floor charts, flowcharts, maps, forms, diagrams of people, emergency plans, and even tools to aid in the planning process. From what I have tested of Smart Draw using its free trial, the software appears to be quite user friendly are primarily relies on the “drag and drop” method. In other words one just needs to click on an object and then move it somewhere else. Smart Draw also uses the same basic keyboard shortcuts as Microsoft’s software and it is even compatible with Microsoft’s Visio software. However, I am only using thein web browser version of the software, thus if the internet i...
