Blog 8: Why IT Fumbles
Dear Mr. Peterson,
I believe that Montclair State should heavily invest in
improving their IT infrastructure. This decision was made after I heard the
consultants from Tuesday. I believe that by improving the IT infrastructure of
MSU will allow for the school to better understand our student body via better
data collection. However, I do have some concerns with regards to improving upon
the suggestions brought about by the consultants.
My first improvement would be to bring on a data analysist
to help better train the staff with regards on how to better input, and output
data. The analytics being conducted by Montclair State appears to share some similarities
to the Data Warehouse system which is going to be implemented by PFM devices.
If this assumption proves true, then having a data analysist would greatly
improve the system’s efficiency.
My second improvement would be to better quantify how this
data would be collected in the first place. Would it be through observation of
students in class rooms, walking around campus, in cafeterias, etc.? Could it
be through a direct line of questioning from a random sample? Or could it be
done by having students report upon issues they are currently facing. In all
three scenarios, the matter of privacy does come up. People might not be
comfortable with sharing their income or other factors of their lives with the
school for one reason or another. In some cases data might be protected by a
privacy agreement between the school and the student, with only the very basic
information being made available due to its sensitive nature. One possible way
to gather information is to ask for it during the application process and have it
be optional. This way you know more about your applicants and what qualities
they have.
My final suggestion
would be to use the data gathered to focus more on improving the school’s
reputation with its core audience. If there are only 28% of out-of-state or international
students, then one can assume that the remaining 72% are in state students.
Thus our school should be trying to bank on that convenience factor. It is
already our competitive advantage over other schools in the area and I feel
that by using the data analytics to further improve upon it will make us
stronger down the road.
