Should We Use Google Drive?
Hello Mr. Peterson,
I was recently Informed that you wanted to switch from Microsoft's Office Suite of Programs to Google's Office offerings. I currently use both office suites in conjunction with each other for academic and personal uses. I feel that I can provide some greater insight into the matter at hand.
In all honestly Mr. Peterson, it would be advisable to use both products, or use Google Drive to assist us with using Microsoft Office. This is primarily because Google offers a basic (yet surprisingly feature rich) package.
Both office suites are compatible with each other. They even share the same basic features and even keyboard shortcuts. This means that one can easily jump between the two programs. Google Drive can also be used on various other devices such as iPads, iPhones, and Android based devices. Thus, one can upload a Word Document to Google Drive and then view and even edit the file on various other devices.
If training and familiarity are an issue, Google Drive shouldn’t take too much time for one to acclimate to it. For example, it took me (a fairly tech literate millennial) about 1 hour to 2 hours to acclimatize to Google’s offerings. I’d imagine someone who is not to tech literate, but is familiar with Microsoft’s Office Suite would take possibly 4 hours to get use to everything. This estimate also includes teaching people how to upload and download files from Google Drive. This means that the price to train one employee would range from $10 to about $40 depending on how tech literate they are.
Ultimately, there is no reason to drop Microsoft office to use Google's own office suite. Use both in tandem with each other or only use the more feature rich options of Microsoft Office. My personal recommendation would be the former option since you can get the benefits of both Office Suites. Such benefits include cross comparability, cloud storage of data, portability, and an increase in the ease of sharing files.
